‘Above all else, I want you to know that you are loved and lovable’.

Do you like Brene Brown? I recently re-read (and loved, again) The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed To Be and Embrace Who You Areand right now am working my way through Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and LeadI checked out her website just recently and found her ‘Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto’, and wanted to share it here.

Every line in Brown’s manifesto rings true; they’re ideals, and, for me, something to aspire to.

I’ve mentioned already that I strongly believe in the values of attachment and gentle parenting, which felt instinctive and natural after Henry was born. I felt, for the first 3 1/2 years of his life, that I knew exactly what I was doing, and was completely confident in the way I mothered him. I admit (although I hate to) that I haven’t found motherhood as easy since having Noah. I think I’d underestimated just how hard it is to take care of two young children at different ages with very different needs, and I’m not always as tolerant and patient as I would like to be. Right now, Noah is teething and has just started to crawl (!), whereas Henry has had bronchitis, followed by a pulmonary infection and the ‘flu, and his teacher is concerned he’s finding the French language very difficult. My partner is working on converting our old hay loft into a ‘forever home’ for our family, and we have our still-new gîte business to build, plus our land and animals, and feeling stressed, tired and overwhelmed feels fairly normal right now. Reading Brene Brown’s words reminded me of the bigger picture, and of what I would like for my babies. I’m going to print her manifesto and hang it in the laundry room – the only quiet ‘me’ space in our new open-plan family home.
